identical stools – a coincidence?

by pleatfarmer on September 11, 2009

A commenter at mocoloco recently mentioned the striking similarity between the two stool designs – one called Habitus by Sebastian Jansson (left image above), and the other simply named Shell (right image above) by Nicholls+Scott of Australia. Let’s get to the concepts, shall we?:

Both stools are three-legged, with similar folding surfaces, though Habitus is a coated steel and Shell is a polished aluminum. For Habitus, Jansson is inspired by the formation of the geometric structures on coffee leaves which in turn is translated into the faceted surface. On the other hand, the Shell is designed with local manufacturing in mind, using common production techniques of a space-frame construction to achieve a light-weight stool that can be assembled anywhere in the world.

Thus, with these in mind, I let you be the judge.
