The exceptional medal design for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics was conceived by Canadian industrial designer/architect Omer Arbel and designer/artist Corrine Hunt. The medals are the first in history to contain gold, silver and copper recovered from end-of-life electronics otherwise destined for the landfill.

The medals are laser-etched with cropped portions of two large abstract artworks by Corrine Hunt – an orca whale for the Olympic medals and a raven for the Paralympic medals – making every medal one-of-a-kind with its cropped motif. According to Omer Arbel, the undulation on each medal corresponds to the natural topography of Vancouver.
