Delving into the simplicity of Dutch design and its cultural mindset, Dutch fashion designer Sanne Jansen combined clean lines with sculptural features in her recent fall/winter collection, Architecture of the Mind. Her subdued yet feminine garments are enhanced with waves of frills, round pleats and exaggerated ruffles, and according to Sanne are flexible enough to be worn on any occasion, including a bike ride.
Hear what Sanne has to say:
“The collection ‘Architecture of the Mind’ is about construction vs. femininity. I wanted to see unusual shapes and volumes being integrated in a garment without becoming blunt or unwearable. The shapes are strong and graphic versus frivolous and ladylike. All garments are constructed out of fabric without adding special support to create volume. In that way the garments become sculptural not sculptures. So you can still ride your bicycle wearing the dress. The total collection is clean and simple with some special details for the wearer.”
“I feel strongly related to Holland’s Calvinistic roots. It’s not about the religious meaning but more about the cultural mindset. I feel connected with the feeling of less is more and the sense of modesty. These are two important piers in my designs. It’s not about being great and compelling but about celebrating simplicity. You can be feminine, sexy or sturdy even by covering up. In fashion femininity is often shown by showing lots of skin and using a lot of decoration, I’d like to show the moderate version of being feminine and sexy.”
“To achieve a soft touch I started to research the possibilities of circles. By playing around with pieces of paper and a pair of compasses the ideas came to life. The circle appeared to be the perfect shape to construct with. It ended up in waves of ruffles and as pillar and millstone shaped skirts. To enhance the soft feeling I used a colour palette based on a beautiful sunset last summer. The sky turned purple, blue, orange, pink etc. The colours were warm with a hint of grey. These colours were combined with the colours of the night; black and dark blue. All materials being used are natural to increase quality and comfort of wearing.”
