Enough of sitting on static chairs? how about a chair that let you do some rock ‘n’ rollin’ by reusing your cardboard? This stool by French designer, Sylvain Bienvenu, is formed out of slotted cutout pieces of cardboard, and would definitely keep you on your toes.

Old films and cassettes were brought to life by artist Erika Iris Simmons who meticulously shaped the tapes into the likeness of popular figures such as Michael Jackson and John Lennon. The self-taught artist is inspired by a philosophy of how a spirit lives in a body, likening these portraits to ‘ghosts’ dwelling inside the cassette packaging. Love how Erika matched and constructed the tousled locks and frizzies on Marley and MJ with the curls on the tapes. Anyway, these are a few of my favorites:

Poketo!’s Recycled Suit Tote Bags

Poketo‘s ‘Spacetime’ wall decals have graced our walls for a few months, and now I’m even more excited with their latest offerings: the Recycled Suit Tote, one-of-a-kind, limited-edition bags, carefully hand-tailored to give men’s suits their second chance at life. They are handmade by Eco Party Mearry, a South Korean design nonprofit.

DIY Reykjavik Pavilion

The DIY Reykjavik pavilion is a temporary installation initiated and designed by Arnaldur Scram and Simon Stigsby of New York-based design firm Shift.

Constructed with one thousand aluminum triangles, each varying in size, shape, fold, and configuration, the pavilion was designed and processed through a variety of 3D software, laser-cut then folded and riveted by hand.

Aluminum was deliberately chosen due to its unique structural challenges, its abundance and recyclability, but also for its potential to generate debate about the current and future use of the material, specifically in Iceland.

Design statement:”The project is about testing the possibilities that ultimately arise with a collapse Iceland has seen. The modern ideological system which governed Iceland in every way has failed and Iceland is now about actualizing opportunities, not admiring false visions. How do designers navigate within this new reality? Are we going to look backwards and let the future happen or are we going to find a way to navigate forward using what we have at hand? DIY Reykjavik pavilion is about political controversy, new economy, new technology and community to ask questions about Iceland’s future.”

Blop Lamp by Emocja Studio

Polish designers Agnieszka Bartosiewicz & Krzysztof Ruść of emocja studio has designed the Blop lamp consisting of cutout paint color chips. The paper chips are assembled using movable plastic rivets so that the user can modify the shape. The lamp comes with a wood stand with adjustable heights.

Paper Pendant Lampshade by MN*LS

Thanks to Ludwig from MN*LS studio for providing these images of their Entre Lineas lamp collection. Through explorations of materials and processes, the one-of-a-kind paper lampshades are conceived with a combination of handicraft and industrial techniques. Small hand folded antique books are turned into romantic & stylish lightings.

The lampshade collection takes a poetic approach to the idea reading between a book’s lines with a light on. Now the light itself comes from between lines, and in Spanish, it is called “entre lineas”.

A Pavilion that’s a PaperVillain!

It really has a nice ring to it! Conceived by a designer collective called The Functionality, PaperVillain is a structure generated by folding numerous recycled newsprints disposed by the Tube commuters . The result is a breathtaking tensile membrane made from 2542 newsprints folded into paper hats!

Read about the design conception the PaperVillain:

“The global shape of the PaperVillain was derived from a series of physical prototypes in which gravity was allowed to naturally
distort each hat into a unique form. The design process of the project was excited by the iterative dialog between the digital and handmade, and as hours of folding became days; we became increasingly familiar with the limits of the material under tension and the demanding logistics of the fabrication process. We returned to the computers to define the location of specific strengthened nodes to spread the load of the papers across a network of cables. These bespoke elements are seamlessly stitched amidst the hats forming large tabloid quilts. This carefully stitched surface created a tensile membrane hanging from a series of predefined wire nodes.”

Artecnica’s Recycled Billboard Stretch Bag

Angharad McLaren Textiles

Colorful pleated fabric by textile designer Angharad McLaren caught my eye. A graduate in Woven Textiles from London’s Royal College of Art, McLaren has this to say about her textiles:

By combining unusual materials with traditional ones, unique designs are created. Qualities inherent in the fibres are explored to create three-dimensional effects, such as permanently pleating polyesters, and traditional techniques such as Japanese Shibori are updated to create a modern, vibrant aesthetic.
