Swedish graphic designer, Clara von Zweigbergk, was inspired by the geometry of the polyhedra and designed the Themis Mobile for Artecnica. The decor piece consisted of five faceted ornaments with its own distinct palette of color: fluorescent neons, purples and browns. I would love to have one for my workspace!

Thanks to Liya Mairson, designer and a graduate of Israel’s Shenkar College for Engineering and Design, who recently shared  images of her latest product.

My Space takes you back to your early childhood entertainment consisting of blanket forts. However, the realities of today’s tight apartment living in urban areas doesn’t afford kids the luxury of space. Designer Liya Mairson responded by designing My Space – a clever pop-up playroom for kids aged three up to the young-at-hearts. As a cardboard flat pack which can be stored  behind doors or under a bed, My Space unfolds into a playroom equipped with pop-up shelves and cutout windows. The folding mechanism of the walls allows kids to operate on their fantasies by creating spaces around the play area.

My space is fully recyclable.

Founded in 2003, Cochae is an origami graphics unit which explores the possibilities of origami, giving a new twist to the traditional art form. The name ‘cochae’ comes from a folk song in Okayama called “Kochae-bushi.” Kochae is a slang term popular in the 1830s-40s, and amounts to multiple meanings such as “come on over” or “it’s great over here”.

Collage: an early series by Cochae, where discarded magazines are collaged to make ‘paper Golems.’ It is an assemblage of origami, a highly geometrical medium, and the raw quality of photography. Just one sheet of paper will magically transform itself into a beautiful objet d’art.

koten: origami that combines the ancient Japanese art of origami with ukiyo-e patterns, and pays homage to the illustrated origami from the Taisho Period, known as Chieno Origami. Koten is a Cochae origami classic loved by all age groups.

Funny faces: the origami can be folded in different ways to make up different faces. There’s no wrong way to fold the paper, so the possibilities are endless.

orimato: a charming origami family inspired by the traditional Russian matryoschka doll. You can fold up their faces and store all of the family members inside the mother.

I’d like to quickly share these awesome handmade kitty dolls made by Chile-based graphic designer David Shin. Called the Eco Tabby, David repurposed plastic shopping bags and utilized the pointy kitty pattern designed by Hillary Lang to create the dolls, while sensibly appropriating the shopping labels on the faces and bodies. Thanks David for sharing his photos of the dolls in whimsical poses!
