Check out these origami-inspired carrying cases designed by UK-based Naoki Kawamoto who conceived of a folding system that combines the Japanese art of origami and traditional wrapping technique of ‘furoshiki’. The geometric shape of each case is derived from a two-dimensional structure with segmented triangulations that are then folded into a volume. Watch the videos of the folding progression.

British designer Alison Dunlop combined her background in sculpture and fashion accessory design to create a series of handbags noted for their lovely facets and the folding subtleties.

The Sessile Handbag by interaction designer Grace Kim is an exploration in merging natural forms with technology. It is hand knitted, felted, and appliqued with ruched cotton “barnacles”. Embroidered into the bag are white surface mount LEDs that alternately fade in and out, creating a gentle, pleasing light.

Poketo‘s ‘Spacetime’ wall decals have graced our walls for a few months, and now I’m even more excited with their latest offerings: the Recycled Suit Tote, one-of-a-kind, limited-edition bags, carefully hand-tailored to give men’s suits their second chance at life. They are handmade by Eco Party Mearry, a South Korean design nonprofit.

Once in a while you would pull off that ‘lazy look’, otherwise your hoodie sweatshirt is probably hiding somewhere in your closet. Now you can channel your ‘origami love’ by transforming your generic hoodie into manifold things! Italian designer Antonio Scarponi of Conceptual Devices has devised various folding techniques to convert a hoodie into a laptop bag, a baby carrier, a pillow, a backpack and a strap bag. So, pull out your hoodie, and watch the videos for instructions.

The Morpholision (Morphology + Vision) bag collection is inspired by forms of nature and sonobe – a Japanese paper folding method. Designed by Si Kim (a graduate of London College of Fashion), the collection is a gorgeous mélange of polyhedral forms resembling sea creatures.

In Si Kim’s words:

Personal/design background:
“I come from a fine art background, having studied many forms of art from a very young age. After my fine art degree i went on to study a design management Masters, and worked as a Graphic designer for 2 years. I then went on to do the MA in fashion artifact.”

Describe your collection, and what are the inspirations behind it:
“My collection was inspired by the different shapes present in nature, like for example the swirling shape of a seashell with its intricate pattern and texture. Or the fine detail in the eye of an insect, or the pattern left by the wind on the desert sand. All these things we see, but not necessarily pay any attention to the continuity and the flow of these patterns. And then the stark contrast between that and the hard lines and angles in geometry and man made structures. My collection is influenced by contemporary art, but also by some traditional art forms such as origami.”

The Tribal collection by recent ArtEZ graduate and Dutch fashion designer, Ratna Ho, is an amalgamation of intricately pleated garments and printed tights inspired by tribal tattoos. Her fanny packs are not to be missed.
